Connecting communities through a bikeway and multi-use trail
It’s not a secret that the City of Burbank boasts a thriving and energetic environment. With more than 100,000 residents and a bustling downtown center, it is known as the “media capital of the world”. This active community doesn’t wait for change to come to them—they make it happen. Recognizing the many benefits of a bicycle-friendly community, the City is continuing its mission. And our active transportation group is right there alongside them.
A safe and enjoyable bikeway system is being developed for all types of riders, while reducing the circulation demands of its busy roadway network. Together, we’re working to complete a critical transportation link through the design of a Class I bikeway and multi-use trail along the Burbank Channel. The bikeway will extend from the busy Metrolink station south towards the Los Angeles River Trail located just beyond the city limits.
We not only provided architectural design, engineering, and environmental services, we also completed detailed cost estimates of the proposed project alternatives. Through meetings with residents and presenting at council meetings, to one-on-ones with city staff, we collaborated with the community of Burbank to gather their feedback and work it into the overall design concept.
Based on the feedback and the City’s desire to embrace the future while honoring the past, we carefully designed linkages and roadway connections to provide public accessibility while preserving the historic architectural character of the existing channel bridges, which were built by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1942.
