Bringing a luxury hotel back to Birmingham’s city centre

The Grand Hotel is a Grade II* listed Victorian hotel in the centre of Birmingham. In 2002, the hotel closed and, due to the risk of crumbling stonework, it had been hidden under scaffolding and protective covers. In 2012, planning permission was granted for plans to restore the building into a luxury hotel.

For this project, our team prepared a transport statement and travel plan to support the planning application to reopen the hotel, as well as reviewing servicing and access arrangements. Our alterations to street parking allowed an improved and more efficient hotel entry and drop-off point. In the access strategy, we also included two-dimensional road designs. The involvement of the highway authority at an early stage secured the approval of the proposed changes to the public realm highway and reduced the project risk. At the same time, the transport statement and travel plan we prepared ensured a smooth progression through the planning process.

The ground floor retail, bars, and restaurants in the Grand opened in 2016—reactivating the frontage on this part of central Birmingham. With the 185-bedroom hotel due to open in 2020, the surrounding area has already benefitted from various regeneration activities, so the opening of the hotel and retail stores is going to be welcomed by the community.
