Increasing efficiency for a UK first in hydropower
Approved in the 1950’s, Ffestiniog Power Station was the United Kingdom's first major pumped storage project. When the mid-life upgrade of the 360-megawatt (MW) power station came due, our team was there to help.
We prepared technical specifications for the design-build refurbishment of the electro-mechanical plant and assisted with evaluating preferred mechanical and electrical tenders, contract negotiations, witnessing for turbine laboratory model testing, review of the contractor’s detailed designs, and engineering technical oversite during implementation. Our team also investigated the condition of the 200-metre high-pressure shaft for the supply of two of the four units. We inspected and undertook specialist concrete condition assessment and analysis of the existing lining, including finite element analysis, specifying repairs and providing support during the tender stage and subsequent works.
With the work now complete and a second refurbishment scheduled, the client will see improved unit availability, increased round trip efficiency and reduced risk of resonance, resulting in reliable, efficient units that support grid stability for the local community.
