Determining the feasibility for a 780-acre campus expansion

Having used most of the available space on its 340-acre main campus in Edmonton, the University of Alberta is planning for most of its future campus expansion to be set on its new 780-acre South Campus, approximately two kilometers to the south.

We completed an energy master plan for the 7,000,000 square feet of built environment projected for the South Campus. The goals for development? To include an integrated and sustainable energy infrastructure, minimizing both long-term energy costs and campus carbon footprint.

Our plan addresses all conventional and renewable energy source supply options, and provides cost and carbon emissions data for each. The result?  We recommended a district energy system that includes cogeneration of electricity and cooling, and includes options for maximum use of sustainable energy sources. Financial analysis and business case support for each recommendation was also included.

Each energy supply option is summarized in a data sheet—a uniform format for comparing levelized energy cost, carbon footprint, future technological development, and sustainability. This innovative tool is structured to facilitate adjustment of the key performance metrics of each energy option, thereby allowing the master plan to be updated easily as energy markets and technology changes.
