Toronto Rehab – University Centre

Sometimes the best way to build someone back up after a disabling injury is to start from scratch. So it was with the Toronto Rehab University Centre project. Transforming the acute care facility into a modern rehabilitation hospital and research facility meant the demolition of the facility’s four storey patient care wing and the construction of a new 13 storey wing that could house the 176 inpatient rooms, extensive outpatient clinics, therapy facilities for each patient unit, and research facilities.

Stantec worked with renowned universal design consultant Cynthia Leibrock to maximize barrier free accessibility throughout the facility, ensuring Toronto Rehab was a space that could accommodate all patients, staff, and visitors.

The research facility pairs 200 rehabilitation researchers, clinicians, engineers, and industrial designers with technology and space, like the iDAPT lab for testing accessibility and assistive devices in a range of environments and climate conditions, to give them unbridled opportunities to improve the lives of patients recovering from and living with disabling injuries, illnesses and age related conditions.
