Creating diverse learning spaces for 700 high school students
At 37 years old, Parkview Education Centre needed upgrades to modernize and improve function for students and teachers. With a limited budget, large building, and a request to preserve the existing building as much as possible, there were challenges—our team was up to the task.
Our design promotes collaboration, creativity and research. With a new learning commons, large project areas and flexible classrooms, students now have supervised, informal places to learn and socialize during free time. We replaced solid classroom walls with glass and opened congested areas to increase daylight. This project was executed using a multi-year phased approach to minimize disruption. Additional features include a healthy living center, gender-neutral washrooms, enhanced mechanical and electrical systems, interior finishes, security, and new classroom technology—with these upgrades, the school’s life has been extended by 25 years.
This school was designed to prepare students for university and modern workplaces. To create this unique environment, we collaborated with the school board, teaching staff and students to understand and prioritize their needs. The result? A facility that helps kids learn in a way that suits them best.
