Functional Design Study of CPR Yards Crossing

We worked with the City of Winnipeg to develop a plan for new and improved ways to cross the CPR Yards

  • Winnipeg, Manitoba

    Winnipeg, Manitoba

How do you reimage a crossing that has connected and defined a community for over a century?

Built in 1911 and over 600 meters long, the Arlington Street Bridge was coming to the end of its service life. Due to escalating maintenance concerns, the city determined rehabilitation couldn’t be an option—they needed a new plan.

Our challenge was to develop a plan that would work for the wider community. Through collaborative planning, we brought together the community, the city of Winnipeg, and consulting team members to participate on a Project Advisory Committee (PAC).  Together, the PAC proposed that phase one of the project would replace the Arlington Bridge—either by building one right where the existing bridge is, or by constructing the new one beside the current bridge.

The new bridge will serve as a link between neighborhoods as a vital transportation channel for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. It will allow businesses to grow, helping to strengthen social connections and helping people make direct connections between their origins and destinations by improving or establishing all forms of travel across the CP rail yards. What’s next? Two new options have been developed for phase two: reconstructing the McPhillips Underpass, or building a McGregor/Sherbrook Tunnel Connection.
