A unique and sustainable wastewater treatment plant design

The City of Thompson needed a solution to their wastewater treatment problems: the existing wastewater infrastructure was failing and did not meet the required effluent quality. Through the Manitoba Water Services Board, we were retained to develop an appropriate solution for the City.

Our team evaluated several options and recommended a centralized wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) facility and developed the design through preliminary, functional, and detailed design phases. The new WWTP liquid stream consists of a six milimetre bar screening, high efficiency grit removal, a sequencing batch reactor based secondary process designed for nutrient removal, and ultraviolet disinfection. The solids stream includes aerobic digestion and centrifuge dewatering. Due to the WWTP’s proximity to housing complexes, a biofilter based odor control system was implemented. The plant employs several sustainable design features, including high efficiency motors, blowers/pumps equipped with variable frequency drives, independent mixing and aeration, and maximizing the use of natural light.

With the project now complete, we were able to improve water quality of the Burntwood River by reducing organic and nutrient loadings, implementing energy efficiency, and ultimately reducing discharge of raw sewage to the river.
