Environmentally-friendly expansion helps adMare bring more life science laboratories and offices to Montreal’s Technoparc
adMare Bioinnovations’ mission is to develop companies, services, and talent in the life sciences sector across Canada. To better support this mission, they decided to expand their Innovation Centre in Montreal by adding nearly 55,000 square feet (5,110 square metres) to the existing 135,000-square-foot (12,542-square-metre) building. They engaged our structural and civil engineering team to help.
We collaborated with the project architect on the design and construction phases of a three-story addition that would house chemistry and biology laboratories and offices. Along with the new steel building, recognizable by its distinctive cantilever, we designed the underground infrastructures and external structures. This includes an adjoining concrete parking area, instead of asphalt, to reduce the heat island effect. The parking area also includes vehicle electric charging stations for site users. Keeping sustainability at the forefront of this project, we created bioretention areas around the site to catch runoff and incorporated a rainwater recovery system.
Now home to around 20 companies and over 200 scientists, the expanded Innovation Centre has been certified LEED Silver for its reduced environmental footprint.
