Mike is a specialist in road safety: he’s a Safe Systems practitioner for road networks and road safety development, and a Safety Audit and Network Functionality (SANF) expert. His passion for road safety, and wide engagement with clients, other consultants, contractors, and government agencies makes him well-known internationally.
The 2011 and 2012 Christchurch earthquakes prompted the New Zealand government to invest in more cycleways. This led Mike to play a significant role in developing the SANF process, which provides a holistic approach to assessing new street designs, considers shared space and user safety—including disability groups—and uses a community-based approach where all road users are considered, to which his multi-modal scheme assessments can testify.
Most mornings Mike goes to work with sand between his toes; as an active patroller for Surf Life Saving New Zealand he’s dedicated to saving lives at the beach as well as on the road.
