Specializing in deep-level shaft design and large-capacity hoisting systems, Derek values hard work and commitment. He dedicates himself to supporting the goals of his clients and the relationships he’s developed have taken him around the world, from Africa to North America, Europe, Mongolia, and Australia.
Derek started his career as a shaft engineer and, for the past 21 years, has been involved in some of the deepest and largest-diameter vertical shaft projects in the world. These projects utilized the latest technology for friction hoists, double drum, and BMR hoists—where the limits of hoisting technology were tested. Derek has lent his expertise to projects including South Deep, Impala No. 16 Shaft, Oyu Tolgoi (2, 4, and 5 Shafts), Nutrien Allan, BHP Jansen, Newmont Tanami Shaft, NexGen Rook I, and Resolution Copper. He’s worked on numerous shaft-sinking projects as a consultant, client, or sinking contractor.
When Derek’s not hard at work, he’s spending time with his family and pursuing his love of the sky as a licensed private pilot and aviation enthusiast.
