Stantec’s international development team in Belgium has been selected by the European Commission to support the development of new road vehicle regulations in North Macedonia, to align with EU principles as well as the latest developments in the area of road transport. Since 2005, North Macedonia has been granted a candidate status by the European Union (EU). As part of this process, the country is working to align policies and infrastructure with those established under EU mandates. In support of these goals, the project objective is to assist the country in strengthening the institutional and legal framework for production, import, and supervision of motor vehicles.
“This contract brings another great opportunity for our growing team of transportation experts to support positive developmental change in a growing context,” remarks Christophe Leroy, Stantec Belgium Operations Director. “This contract is a proof of the company’s strong commitment to place Western Balkans in the focus of its operations. We look forward to working with the EU and the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of North Macedonia to bring this project to a successful end.”
The Stantec team will have two main responsibilities. The first focuses on the harmonization of legal frameworks, including a current-state assessment, a gap analysis, capacity building workshops, drafted amendments, and integration of proposed changed into the upcoming legal framework. The second includes an assessment of the institutional, legal and operational setup of various bodies/intuitions and the production of analysis reports. As part of the project, the team will organize workshops with key stakeholder groups, as well as a final consultation with relevant decision makers where the key recommendations will be presented.
Once completed, the outputs delivered by the Stantec team will assist the Republic of North Macedonia in making proper assessments and decisions around which vehicles should be permitted on their roadways. This framework will not only help secure the country’s roadways and increase safety measures, but also support North Macedonia in their efforts towards EU ascension.
