Leading global design firm Stantec is initiating a statewide floodplain modeling and mapping project with The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) as part of the TWDB’s effort to understand and evaluate regional flood risks to drive statewide efforts in the creation of effective flood mitigation strategies. The increase of extreme weather events, like Hurricane Harvey and other recent and recurrent intense rainfall events, continue to underscore the importance of understanding flood risks throughout the state. The mission of the TWDB is to lead the state’s efforts in promoting a secure water future for Texas and its citizens including the development of regional flood plans and incorporating them into the first statewide flood plan.
Stantec is partnering with the TWDB to develop base level engineering (BLE) floodplain modeling and mapping studies as part of a multi-year effort that will include key components such as two-dimensional (2D) riverine model development, hydrologic and hydraulic assessments, and flood hazard mapping.
Stantec was selected for this contract following a request for qualifications process given its strong history with modeling over 15,000 miles of BLE projects nationwide, demonstrated innovation in applying flood-risk tools, and experience conducting flood studies in Texas.
“Analyzing flood risk and the underlying data in a state as large, diverse, and dynamic as Texas is no simple task,” said Mason Liebau, project manager for Stantec. “Our team is experienced and well prepared as a national Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Production and Technical Services (PTS) contractor, having performed more than 60,000 miles of floodplain analyses across 34 states. We are excited to be part of this important effort to provide effective mitigation strategies protecting and updating flood-risk data and mapping for the citizens of Texas.”
Stantec has a long history of providing floodplain modeling and mapping services throughout the U.S. For more than 40 years, the firm has provided engineering and mapping services in support FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), supporting the agency’s efforts to mitigate flood risk nationwide. Since 2009, Stantec has supported FEMA’s Risk Mapping, Assessment, and Planning (Risk MAP) program with flood hazard analysis and floodplain management services.
