Stantec will support the European Commission’s work to improve Ghana’s transport sector through capacity building activities

Leading global design firm Stantec has been selected by the European Commission to work with Ghana to action their part of the Regional Transport Governance project, which aims to facilitate the stable and secure movement of goods and people across West Africa. The team will focus on improvements to north-south and east-west interstate connections in an effort to address the role transportation plays in the country’s move towards industrialization.
The Stantec team of experts will provide advisory and capacity building actions with the overarching goal to improve the governance of road maintenance, as well as to improve transport services, conditions, and the fluidity of regional road corridors. On top of the institutional and regulatory capacity-building actions that will be taken, the team will also focus on assisting with administrative and technical simplification, improved maintenance and overloading reduction to the regional network, and capacity-building among administrations and relevant agencies.
“Our team has built a strong track record of work related to governance, capacity building & policy reform in the fields of climate change and sustainable energy, and we are happy that the opportunity presents itself again to apply this expertise in the context of transportation,” said Christophe Leroy, Operations Director for Stantec in Belgium. “Efforts done as part of this project to reduce greenhouse gas automobile emissions align perfectly with our experience with reducing the impacts of climate change.”
Ultimately, this project will greatly enhance roadway infrastructure and improve regional integration which has implications towards more equitable wealth distribution. The Stantec team will work in close concert with local experts to actualize this transformative project, along with the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) community, who they have partnered with several times in the past, such as with the Support to ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA) project.
