Gord Johnston named CEO of the Year

The honor comes from The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine

Stantec’s Gord Johnston was named CEO of the Year by The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine last night in a special ceremony at The Globe and Mail Centre in Toronto. Selected by the editorial staff, Johnston was chosen for the magazine’s hallmark accolade from a panel of Canadian executive honorees representing different categories of industry accomplishment.

Johnston was honored for his commitment to innovation, efficiency, and quality while currently steering Stantec through the most ambitious growth trajectory in the firm’s 71-year history. Appointed as Stantec’s president and CEO in 2018, Johnston has brought more than 30 years of industry leadership to his role with experience in both public and private sector project delivery across the globe. 

Active within the industry, Johnston has served on the board of directors for ACEC-Canada, as past-president of the Consulting Engineers of Alberta, and as chair of the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association Biosolids Committee. He also served on the TELUS Edmonton community board.

Alongside the CEO of the Year designation, Johnston was identified as the CEO Strategist of the Year to recognize “a CEO whose bold decisions have materially changed and improved the strategic position of his or her business.” Other executive honorees included:

  • Corporate Citizen of the Year: Michael Garcia, CEO, Algoma Steel
  • Innovator of the Year: Neil Cawse, founder and CEO, Geotab
  • New CEO of the Year: Bill Lomax, president and CEO, First Nations Bank of Canada
