Debra Johnson talks to CIM Magazine about how optimizing and reducing energy consumption can help achieve mining decarbonization goals
Right now, industries around the world are looking for ways to reduce emissions and embrace sustainability. This includes the mining industry, which has been making strides in recent years to decarbonize operations and adhere to stricter environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Mining requires a lot of power to operate, and that typically leads to a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions. But what if our mines could operate using less energy? And what if we could implement renewable energy sources to offset some of the carbon emissions?
Debra Johnson, Stantec’s senior strategist for Net Zero and Sustainable Mining, Minerals, and Metals, was featured in CIM Magazine to discuss the importance of energy consumption at mine sites. She believes it all starts with a mine energy audit. By performing an energy audit, mining companies can deeply understand when and where their operations are using energy. This can help them to find inefficiencies—the first step in knowing how to optimize energy usage at their site. This knowledge can determine next steps in finding operational efficiencies to reduce both energy consumption and carbon emissions.
