Our ongoing partnership with SNS helps make the 2019/20 Family Series a resounding success

Symphony Nova Scotia’s (SNS) Family Series serves a widely diverse audience through free, accessible concerts held in public spaces throughout Halifax and Dartmouth. These all-ages experiences combine full orchestral performances with interactive learning opportunities and are a chance for people of all ages and abilities to share the wonder and joy of live music together.
Stantec has been a proud supporter of the SNS for the past five years. We know arts and culture is important within our thriving communities, and we are excited to be part of keeping the music going in Nova Scotia.
Throughout fall 2019 and winter/spring 2020, SNS presented three unique Family Series experiences that were all created, conducted, and hosted by the orchestra’s Community Ambassador and Artist in Residence, Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser. Daniel is an engaging and enthusiastic conductor who appears across North America, and his dynamic combination of musical expertise, relevant programming, and relaxed, open commentary have made him an audience favorite here in Nova Scotia.
The 2019/20 Family Series lineup kicked off in the fall with “Symphony Got Style” at Dartmouth’s Alderney Landing Theatre and Halifax’s Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. With the orchestra playing classical, jazz, rock, modern, and soul, the participants were able to explore the many different styles of music.
In January, Daniel and Symphony Nova Scotia partnered with a group of exciting local musicians, artists, and dancers to present “Nova Scotia’s Got Talent!” at Alderney Landing Theatre. It was a boisterous, engaging celebration of local musical talent, and a showcase for some truly impressive up-and-coming young acts.
The 2019/20 lineup ended on a high note with one of Symphony Nova Scotia’s flagship family experiences: “Black Is Beautiful”. Presented at the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia in Cherry Brook and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, “Black Is Beautiful” highlighted a wide variety of influential Black performers and composers, including icons like Duke Ellington, Whitney Houston, Chevalier St. Georges, Jimi Hendrix, and Beyonce.
Symphony Nova Scotia’s 2019/20 Family Series connected with over 2,000 Nova Scotians, sharing the joy of live music in an open, accessible, and fun environment.
