Our new scholarship saw 30 STEAM students around the globe receive funding for their education—five of those students accepted internships at Stantec
At the beginning of the year, we launched the global Stantec Equity & Diversity Scholarship. This new scholarship provides people in historically underrepresented communities, including Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), with financial aid.
We recognize the value and advantages of diverse ideas within our communities and are committed to providing a platform to support the next generation of leaders and champions in our industry. We’re focused on growing diversity within the science, technology, engineer, arts, and math (STEAM) fields because we believe everyone has a right to education.
2021 was our launch year for this scholarship; a year that many students have struggled with not only academically, but financially because of the ongoing global pandemic. We received many worthy applications—over 760 applicants—making this inaugural year a complete success. Our new Stantec Equity & Diversity Scholarship allowed us to give 30 students around the globe funding for their continued education, as well as provide five paid internships in with our Water and Environmental Services teams in North America.
Meet our 2021 recipients and sign up to be notified when submissions open in September.
The recipients are from Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, Mexico, and New Zealand. They are passionate about their studies which are in a wide range of disciplines including Engineering, Mathematics, Graphic Design, Psychology, Anatomy & Human Biology, Architecture, and more. We have recipients who are ACE Mentor alumni, volunteer with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Engineers without Borders, American Indian Science and Engineering Society, and other programs that Stantec partners with, making these connections even more impactful.
We aim to ensure each one of us can bring our full selves to work and achieve our potential through a supportive and collaborative professional environment that nurtures a collective force of unique talents. By embracing difference, not only do we offer a better work environment for our people, but we deliver better solutions to our clients. This scholarship program is part of a broader company strategy to create a framework that addresses the holistic impact that equity, diversity, and inclusion have in creating an engaged workplace culture, prioritizing talent development and retention and, ultimately, elevating design excellence.
We are thrilled to continue this scholarship into our second intake. Based on our experience with the first intake, we are advancing the application process to September to better align with engaging interns.
Built around the goal of attracting and retaining a diverse talent workforce, we want to help the next generation of industry leaders achieve their academic goals to better our communities. Through this scholarship and other I&D initiatives, we believe anything is possible.
