Such significant population growth requires equally significant planning and design.

An additional half-a-million people are expected to enjoy life in leafy north-west Sydney by 2040.

The Lower South Creek Treatment Program (LSCTP) is an upgrade to three of Sydney Water’s major inland wastewater treatment plants—Riverstone, St Marys and Quakers Hill—to cater for this population boom and to protect the region’s much-loved waterways.

We were engaged to provide the engineering development and design at all three sites: implementing mechanical primary screens for treatment at each, and an ingenious Aerobic Granular Sludge procedure for the secondary treatment at Quakers Hill. In addition, our ‘best-of-breed’ designs at two sites provide Sydney Water with the flexibility to adopt and alter them, if required, for use elsewhere.

Throughout delivery, we also developed the Building Information Management (BIM) tools, drawing on our detailed knowledge to aid construction through the development of material take off and quantities, and identify cost savings such as combining multiple structures into one and re-routing a storm bypass pipeline.

The result? Sustainable, cost-efficient and effective wastewater treatment plants that will continue to benefit the community and the environment.
