Setting the stage for effective management of future biosecurity threats
Responsible for biosecurity and protecting the state’s vital agricultural industries, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has been allocated $320 million for a new metropolitan facility in Perth. With the existing facilities having been built in the 1950s, they were aging and longer fit for purpose—we were there to help.
The new greenfield site will consist of nearly 18,000 square metres of laboratories. It will include technical workspaces for up to 350 staff and accommodate key strategic partners, including Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre. The building, which will provide facilities that allow effective management of biosecurity threats, will be located within Murdoch Universities Eastern Precinct. It will have highly technical, complex, and bespoke laboratories, including biological containment Level 3 spaces with strict control of environmental conditions. Green considerations and the high complexity of the facility along with being on a strict budget all contribute to the difficulty of this large-scale project.
We are providing early and proactive stakeholder engagement to make sure that the project is completed to a high standard. Ultimately, this project will take steps towards growing and protecting Western Australia's primary industries for future generations.
