Upgrading a landmark bridge across Johnstons Bay in Sydney
As the longest cable-stayed bridge in Australia, the ANZAC Bridge is an iconic landmark, stretching 805 metres, with a main span of 345 metres, and towers reaching up to 120 metres high. Since opening, the bridge has experienced rain-wind induced vibration issues with the stay cables. The bridge needed dampers and stay surface treatment to eliminate the vibrations. In addition, the stay and deck capacity required a structural assessment for several live load cases—where any non-permanent moveable parts, contents, or users, such as traffic and people, would be weighed and tested on the structure.
As part of the Bridge Solutions Alliance, we provided the design services for the project. Working closely with our partners, we developed and verified a structural model for the bridge and were responsible for the stay and deck capacity assessment. Our team was also responsible for the bridge specific assessment of live loading using statistical analysis of recorded traffic data. As part of the bridge’s maintenance access improvements, we provided design and checking services for the temporary works and underdeck gantry improvements.
Today, users enjoy travel over a safe and reliable structure. And will do so well into the future.
