South-West Scotland Transport Appraisal

In preparation for the second Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2), the Scottish Government’s transport agency, Transport Scotland, commissioned a series of regional transport appraisals, each broadly covering the Initial Appraisal stage of the process. We were commissioned in partnership with another consultancy to deliver the South-West Scotland Transport Study, which covered Dumfries & Galloway and parts of Ayrshire.

The study involved an assessment of the problems and opportunities of the transport system, the development of Transport Planning Objectives which reflect those problems and opportunities, and the generation and initial appraisal of options which could deliver those objectives.

The study concluded with the identification of 23 multi-modal option packages, which were recommended for further consideration in the STPR2 process. We supported Transport Scotland in taking the appraisal outcomes out to consultation through a combination of a public online survey, stakeholder workshops, and depth interviews.

A number of the interventions identified and recommended for further consideration were taken through to the national Scottish Transport Projects Review which will be proposing a programme for investment over the next 20 years.
