Transport strategies support strong economic growth

Back in 1999, in partnership with Reading Borough Council, we created a 2020 vision for the Reading urban area that identified a transport strategy to support strong economic growth and reduce reliance on car travel.

Reading was in the market for a fast-track public transport solution that would connect park-and-ride sites to the town centre and stations. We were hired to prepare a full business case for phases 1 and 2 of the scheme, and the project was awarded £4.5M by Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The result? The Mass Rapid Transit plan.

Phases 1 and 2 provide bus links to connect the existing bus lanes through M4 Junction 11 and the recently constructed Mereoak park-and-ride facility along the A33. We also designed and project managed the construction of portions of phase 1 and all of phase 2. This included the introduction of a southbound bus lane by widening the existing carriageway and the addition of a dedicated lane, overcoming challenges to construct the new bus lane close to an existing watercourse while maintaining the ecological habitat.

With this transport strategy in place, the route has improved journey times and reliability of service, and Reading commuters can now reduce their reliance on car travel and can commute into the city in a faster more environmentally friendly way.
