Johnson Street Storm Overflow Screening Project
The Johnson Street storm overflow screening project is designed to protect the River Tyne from aesthetic pollution, improving river quality for the benefit of the community, wildlife and the environment.
To meet with new regulatory consents issued by the Environment Agency, Esh-Stantec joint venture was appointed by Northumbrian Water to design and deliver this project. Works comprised of a new high flow volume mechanically self-cleansing screen installed within a large diameter shaft sunk onto the Tyneside Interceptor sewer, a new 1800mm storm overflow constructed using tunnelling techniques, and 100m of channel break out to increase conveyance capacity of the critical existing sewer.
During construction, a new temporary pumping station was positioned to manage the high sewerage flows with minimal temporary works. The existing storm overflow chamber was modified and utilised as a secondary network relief point, removing the requirement for additional works and storage, significantly reducing the whole carbon footprint for the project.
With the new works, we’ve reduced the aesthetic pollution from a 22,500-population catchment entering the river. And hydraulic modelling indicates a reduction in storm overflow spill frequency during storm events.
The project has realised multiple benefits including enhanced river environment and water quality, improved community areas and provided better river access.
