    Roehampton, Wandsworth, United Kingdom

Going beyond new homes to transform an estate and improve the quality of life of a whole community

The Alton Estate is an iconic social housing estate famed for its brutalist architecture and spectacular setting next to Richmond Park. The London Borough of Wandsworth envisioned a regeneration worthy of the estate’s original post-World War II ideals: improving residents’ life chances, health, and wellbeing, as well as the area’s housing choices and socioeconomic infrastructure. The Borough engaged us as part of the team to help realize their vision.

We provided a full spread of planning, environmental, development economics, and architectural services and delivered a holistic approach to shaping the regeneration proposals. Alongside new homes, the team knew that community facilities would be at the heart of achieving the scheme and bringing residents together. In addition to new public green space and a village square, the team transformed non-residential areas into a new library, healthcare facilities, youth services, community hall, children’s center and nursery, and flexible commercial space.

The resulting development completely revitalised the local center for Roehampton and its residents.
