We spoke to University Technical College Leeds about being one of their industry partners and increasing students understanding of STEM careers
We welcomed University Technical College (UTC) Leeds to our dockside Leeds office to speak with data analyst, Jack Lonsdale about Stantec’s role as one of their regional industry partners.
The UTC’s vision is to develop students who will make a valuable and lifelong contribution to society and the engineering industry. Their curriculum is industry-focused, with an approach that enables students to develop the professional behaviours required by employers, such as problem-solving, time management, organisation, teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
UTC’s curriculum exposes students to cutting-edge technologies and employer-led projects that provide a challenging, well-rounded education. Stantec recently got involved and delivered a geography-based project to students. By giving the students real world problems that we’re working on it allow us to see what their perspective is.
We are proud to be an industry partner with UTC. Our role includes interacting with students to share our knowledge and experience. But our partnership is not just about help with studies. Our activity also increases their understanding of what people in STEM careers do and the breadth of opportunities available to them.
University Technical Colleges offer an innovative approach to combining vocational and technical education, bringing industry and education together to ensure young people learn both the technical and professional skills the UK economy needs. A great example of how this is being put into action locally is our own Alise Germova, Level 3 Apprentice in Civil Engineering. A former UTC Leeds student, Alise now works in our Leeds office! Read her interview with UTC to discover more about her experience at UTC and becoming a Stantec apprentice.
We are committed to supporting our local communities and this includes STEM volunteering. Find out more about how we are making a difference in places where we live and work.
