Shaping the future of communities

Communities are facing major challenges to their long-term sustainability. An increasingly changing climate. Pollution of the biosphere and oceans. Loss in biodiversity. At the same time, there are opportunities for positive change through new technologies, ecosystem regeneration, and holistic, unified planning by community leaders. An ecosystem infrastructure approach—integrating the natural and built environment—is key to transforming the future of our communities.

A company’s success is dependent on the health of the environment and communities it touches. Embracing strategies that help protect these connections furthers its competitive advantage.

I became a designer just because I think

00:04

like all of us we want to change the

00:05

world and we think that we are a riot

00:07

and everyone else is less right and you

00:09

know we have kind of ideas about how

00:12

things should be and we'll never be

00:14

satisfied and it keeps us interested and

00:16

intrigued and I think that that's

00:18

something that's kept me a designer and

00:21

so sustainability was one of these

00:22

things that from a sort of philosophical

00:25

standpoint for me it became very

00:26

interesting because suddenly it was not

00:29

about you know what your design style is

00:31

and what's fashionable right now but it

00:33

was really an idea about we can all

00:36

agree that philosophically clean air is

00:38

better than polluted air and clean water

00:40

is said of in polluted water and healthy

00:44

buildings are better than non healthy

00:45

buildings so if you could turn that into

00:48

kind of an ethos and that would give you

00:50

something to stand on that was sort of

00:52

time I think that at the end of the day

00:54

the thing that I'm trying to do is to

00:56

make the building more sustainable more

00:59

healthy and more resilient and so if I

01:01

can accomplish any one of those three

01:03

things or all of them that I feel like

01:05

I've had a good day

Stantec becomes a UN Decade partner

The United Nations (UN) believes it’s time to prioritize ecosystem restoration. With the world’s population growing, we have to provide more food, energy, and clean water to more people. This trend, combined with climate change and biodiversity loss, is driving the critical need for this work—which is why we’re partnering with the UN for the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). Like the UN, we believe healthy ecosystems enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity. Read More
