Earthquake Engineering
Developing resilient, adaptive solutions for risky ground
Infrastructure is a critical investment in our communities and must be built to last. Earthquake engineers design new buildings and infrastructure to withstand disasters, and assess the vulnerability of existing buildings and infrastructure, drawing from expertise in structural and geotechnical engineering.
You have questions: How susceptible are my assets to damage in varying strengths of earthquake? Where is the best place to build to avoid severe damage in an earthquake?
We use advanced numerical modelling, create computer simulations, and provide site investigations (comprising boreholes, cone penetration and lab testing, geophysical surveying, and soil testing under different shaking levels)—all to help you understand your risks in seismic events. With the results of these models, simulations, and tests, you’ll be better prepared for the next earthquake, you can update your emergency plans, and you’ll have a better idea of where to build.
Earthquakes can cause property and infrastructure damage and threaten personal safety, and New Zealand has plenty of seismic events. While our analysis may be complex, our end goal is simple: to make our communities stronger and safer, now and in the future, for everyone.
