Ryan Hanley Project Experience

Coolatee Integrated Constructed Wetlands (ICW)

Location: Coolatee, County Donegal
Client: Uisce Éireann
Services: Nature-based Solutions

Ryan Hanley, through the JV with Stantec, is delivering a program of nature-based solutions for wastewater treatment. The Coolatee ICW facilitated Uisce Éireann in removing this site from its list of untreated agglomerations and removed untreated wastewater discharge to the Foyle Estuary. By selecting the constructed wetland option for wastewater treatment, a wastewater solution was delivered that operated without the need for an energy supply and any treated water connection, all while increasing the biodiversity of the area.

Dublin Water Supply

Location: Dublin, County Dublin
Client: Uisce Éireann, Glanua
Services: Diverse design services

Ryan Hanley scoped major components of Uisce Éireann’s program for upgrade of the water supply to the Greater Dublin Area, including design services to upgrade treatment processes at Leixlip Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The company also delivered the Strategic Watermain Link Between Leixlip and Saggart Project, part of the client’s strategy to deliver a sustainable and resilient water supply for the greater Dublin area. With a construction value of over €28 million (C$43.8 million), the project was one of Uisce Éireann’s largest infrastructure projects when it completed in 2019.

O’Shaughnessy Bridge

Location: Galway, County Galway
Client: University of Galway
Services: Design and engineering

This locally iconic bridge provides a new pedestrian access route to the campus of University of Galway. The structure is a 48-metre-long (157-foot-long), bar stayed, steel bridge over the Eglinton Canal, with a separate 15-metre-long (49.2-foot-long) approach bridge over the Newcastle River. The structural form chosen produces a very slender, elegant, aesthetically pleasing structure.

National Flood Programme

Location: Across Ireland
Client: Office of Public Works (OPW)
Services: Engineering and Environmental Services

Ryan Hanley is working with the OPW and local authorities across Ireland to deliver projects under the €1.5 billion (C$2.3 billion) National Flood Risk Management Programme. The objectives of these projects are the identification, design, and submission (for planning consent) of Flood Relief Schemes that are technically, socially, environmentally and economically acceptable. The goal is to alleviate the risk of flooding to communities to a determined Standard of Protection, and to procure, manage, and oversee the construction of the proposed flood relief measures.

Galway City Water Supply Scheme

Location: Galway, County Galway
Client: Uisce Éireann, Galway City Councill
Services: Engineering and Environmental Services

Following the design and implementation of process solutions for Galway City’s water supply in 2007, Ryan Hanley designed a major upgrade to the existing Terryland Municipal Water Treatment Plant. This included the design of an increase in process and pumping capacity and associated medium voltage electrical supply between 2010 - 2014. A need for a new raw water abstraction works nearby to accommodate future demands for the city followed and was commissioned in 2024. The company oversaw the delivery of this project from archeological assessments through overall project management.

Kilkenny City Water Supply Scheme

Location: Kilkenny City, Co Kilkenny
Client: Uisce Éireann
Services: Engineering Design, Procurement, Construction Management, and Environmental services

Ryan Hanley delivered a sustainable and secure potable water source for Kilkenny City and surrounding areas. The team managed all stages from concept, feasibility, planning consent, and detailed design to procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover. They developed a new intake facility with transfer pipelines, upgraded the water treatment plant, and designed and constructed additional potable water storage and interconnector trunk mains. This project successfully met the community’s long-term water needs while prioritizing environmental sensitivity.
