Creating a beach renourishment process to bring a beach back to its best
The most photogenic, “Instagrammable” beach in Melbourne is currently undergoing a makeover.
Dendy Street Beach in Brighton, with its iconic, colorful bathing boxes, is renowned for its recreational opportunities, economic value, and cultural heritage. However, of late the beach, the bathing boxes, coastal dunes, and native vegetation have become vulnerable to erosion effects—which are increasing due to climate change.
Bayside City Council engaged with us to restore the popular beach in a sustainable low-impact manner. After a careful investigation and analysis by our coastal experts, our design solution utilized the naturally occurring coastal processes, sourcing the renourishment sand for the beach locally. This enabled us to provide an environmentally friendly and economically efficient outcome.
This round of beach regeneration will aim to provide 3 to 5 years of immediate protection for the beach, and the boxes, which will give Bayside City Council time to consider longer-term options. Playing a role in preserving an iconic place for recreation has been extremely rewarding, and we are proud to contribute to the role the beach plays in the life of the community and economy of Brighton.
